Chapter 16

Colson

The rest of dinner went by uneventfully. Tate and I made small talk to pass the time until our dinner was served. As we eat, I look back on meeting Luis and Carmen. They came out of the kitchen like a couple of tornadoes, scooping up my girl as if they hadn’t seen her in years. As I watched them interact, I can tell they love my Tate. They both embraced her and looked at her with concern and worry. Apparently, she comes in her quite frequently and since the threats and her moving in with me, she hasn’t been out much. Which is why we are out on a date tonight. Not only did she need to get out, but I knew it was about time for our first date. I need her to understand what I want and need. Her.

Tate explained to them why she hasn’t been around, and I snort when she says she’s fine. Tate is many things, but fine’s not one of them. She has a man stalking her, threatening her life, and she brushes it off as if it’s nothing unusual. Damn this woman infuriates me and turns me on at the same time. Her fire is what drew me to her, yet there’s a sadness that has my protective instincts on high alert. Tate’s an amazing woman and I enjoy peeling back her layers, learning more about what makes her who she is. The woman I’m falling in love with.

Once Luis and I have our few moments of attempting to assert our dominance over each other, Tate and I sit and continue our date. All through dinner, I find myself staring at her. Taking in every look and nuance. The need I have for this woman scares me as well as enflames me. I’ve never felt so strongly for a woman before. I mean, I’ve dated and slept with my fair share of women, but I’ve never gotten close to them.

Being a cop and a detective is a dangerous job. At any time, I could get hurt or worse. Until Tate, I never wanted to burden a woman with the risks my job poses. I know firsthand how devastating it can be to lose a loved one to violence. I watched my grandma and mom grieve their husbands and I never want to put a woman through that pain.

Tate has me reexamining my life. Yes, my job can be scary, but it seems less so since she has come into my life. Tate gives me a reason to live. A reason to get up in the morning and go fight the bad guys. A reason to come home every night. A reason to love. She is my reason.

We finish dinner and I settle the bill while she says her goodbyes to Luis and Carmen. Carmen hands me a bag with what I can guess is some of their amazing food. I take it gratefully and thank them for an amazing experience. Tate and I walk hand in hand to my truck.
